7 Ways Nature at Work Benefits People and Performance

Americans spend roughly 90 percent of their time indoors, according to the EPA — and much of that time is spent at work, in controlled, sedentary environments. A growing body of research from environmental psychology, neuroscience, and workplace design shows that even brief periods outdoors during the workday can positively influence employee health, mental clarity, and wellbeing.

This paper outlines evidence-based benefits of integrating nature at work across three areas of health:

  • Mental health and cognition. Reduces stress and lifts mood, sharpens focus and boosts performance, inspires creativity and problem solving.
  • Physical health and energy. Supports sleep and circadian health, encourages movement and reduces sedentary strain.
  • Social and organizational health. Strengthens social connection and belonging, offers greater agency and autonomy.

Incorporating elements of the outdoors into the workplace achieves benefits that are physiological, psychological and increasingly, organizational. As a result, biophilic practices are becoming a design priority for a healthy, high-functioning workplace.
